Activities

To balance the academic pursuits of the pupils, a wide and varying number of activities are offered to all pupils. Sports are a key activity at Westminster, as are Art, Drama and Music.

Over the academic year, the School organises several exchanges and expeditions. In addition, some pupils participate in annual events such as PHAB (Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied) and Commemoration along with School traditions like The Greaze each Shrove Tuesday.

For 13+ boys

Members of the teaching staff and outside tutors run a wide range of activities that are available as part of a boy’s regular programme in the Lower School. A choice of activity is offered to broaden their experience and to encourage them to develop new interests.

Every boy is normally expected to take part in two Lower School Activities (LSAs) a week. He may opt for only one, if other commitments in and out of School are particularly demanding.

These activities occur usually between 4.30 and 6.30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Some musical groups meet at lunchtime on these days.

There are some 30 different options available, each involving from three to twenty boys. LSAs include both academic and non-academic subjects, and some sports, which can serve as an extension to the sports programme.

Once activities are selected and agreed, pupils are committed for the term. Thereafter they can choose to continue with or change either or both of their choices. Some LSAs are seasonal, some change from term-to-term.

The flexibility of the scheme enables boys to pursue an established interest from term-to-term (for example, a language) or to experiment and discover new possibilities.

For 16+ boys and girls

For sixth-form pupils, the Options programme encompasses a diverse number of activities including a Film Society, Debating and Model United Nations (MUN), and a Community Service option that arranges visits to Primary Schools and Drop in Centres.
