| Major stations |
|---|
| Athletics |
There are eleven major stations that have full programmes of matches and competitions against other schools. Some matches take place on a Saturday afternoon.
Every opportunity is made for gifted individuals to participate at local,
regional or national levels. All major stations benefit from the involvement
of professional coaches, several of whom have represented their countries
in international matches and competitions, including the Olympic Games.
In Year 9 (Fifth Form) all boys opt for a major station, enabling them
to continue a sport from their previous school or gain expertise in a
new pursuit such as rowing.
For sixth-form girls, netball is popular. The girls frequently represent
the School at water, fencing, squash, swimming, shooting and tennis.

The wide range of stations on offer enables all pupils to choose an
activity that they can enjoy and reach a high level of performance. The
Station Options programme endeavours to provide an activity if there is
sufficient demand and if suitable facilities are available locally. Community
Service and Art are also on offer to sixth formers.
Despite
the School’s central London location, Westminster has secured the
use of first-class facilities for most stations near the School. For facilities
further afield, like the Boathouse (rebuilt in 1996) on the Tideway at
Putney, the School provides a coach or minibus to transport all participants.

CENTURIES OF SPORT |
| Historically, the principal sports at the School are rowing, football and cricket. All three have a long tradition at Westminster, dating back to the eighteenth century and the distant origins of these sports. The School can rightfully claim a place in their annals – for instance:
Westminster therefore made an important contribution to the early development of sport in Britain. |
