Historically, the principal sports at the School
are rowing, football and cricket. All three have a long tradition
at Westminster, dating back to the eighteenth century and the
distant origins of these sports.
The School can rightfully claim a place in their annals –
for instance:
- the first known cricket match between public schools was
Westminster vs Harrow in 1796;
- the Westminster colours were supposedly chosen after rowing
against Eton in 1837 (the School won and chose pink);
- Westminster competed against Charterhouse in the first ever
inter-school football matches in 1863.
Westminster therefore made an important contribution to the early
development of sport in Britain.
