The Under School

Westminster Under School is a day preparatory school with its own head master (the Master) and teaching staff, under the supervision of the Governing Body of Westminster School. It is one of the country’s most successful schools at this age level. The Under School was established in 1943. It moved to Adrian House (in Vincent Square) in 1981.

Examination

There are 250 boys aged between 7 and 13 at the Under School. All boys are prepared for the Common Entrance examination and the most able pupils take The Challenge (scholarship examination) at Westminster or apply for scholarships elsewhere. Most boys continue on to Westminster at the age of 13 subject, of course, to their reaching the required standard in the Common Entrance Examination or being offered entry through The Challenge.

Registration and entry

Entry to the Under School is in September of the year in which a boy reaches the age of either 7 or 8, by means of a competitive examination held in the previous January.
