"I can't believe how much outdoor space we have, it's so amazing in the centre of London"

Where fitness meets fun

“I look forward to our games lessons and that we can try so many different sports. And I can’t believe how much outdoor space we have, it’s so amazing in the centre of London.”

Westminster’s Sport programme offers pupils a choice of more than 20 different sporting activities.

Each week the boys have two morning or afternoon sessions dedicated to Games, and although football, cricket, swimming and athletics are among the most popular pursuits there is a wide range of sports for the boys to choose from, including Ultimate Frisbee and Fives. The lessons are all designed to help them develop an understanding of their bodies in action, enable them to perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities and promote a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle.

Some of our activities take place off site, for example the weekly swimming lessons in the Queen Mother Sports Centre on Vauxhall Bridge Road. However, we are extremely fortunate to have an unparalleled amount of our own space for sport. In addition to our playing fields at Vincent Square we have a wonderful Sports Centre that we share with the Great School, offering over 6,000m² of indoor space and housing a multi-use movement studio, a rowing training suite, fencing pistes, indoor cricket nets, a fully equipped gym, two climbing walls, a Judoka and a table tennis area and courts for basketball, netball, five-a-side football, volleyball, hockey and badminton.

In many of our sports the pupils benefit from the teaching of professional coaches, several of whom have represented their countries in international matches and competitions, including the Olympic Games. This is an enormous asset to us, particularly when it comes to preparing our pupils to represent the school in local and national sporting events.

In addition to the health benefits of regular exercise and the enjoyment our pupils find in playing sport, we’re also giving pupils the opportunity to gain important life skills. Qualities such as determination, tolerance, confidence and empathy can be developed through competing against other individuals and teams, in addition to learning how to be both gracious winners and good losers.

"Our coaches are great, we're so lucky to be able to learn from people who have competed themselves"

"Climbing isn't just about strength, it's about planning and concentration, thinking through your next move"
