Westminster School is one of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions, renowned for combining intellectual rigour with energy, debate, and a liberal, globally-minded education. It offers an environment that is both historically rich and forward-looking. Pupils are encouraged to explore ideas, challenge themselves and achieve their full potential.

The School comprises Westminster School, for pupils aged 13-18, and Westminster Under School, which currently serves pupils aged 7-13 and from September 2026 will welcome pupils from age 4 into its brand new Pre-prep. The Schools are currently undergoing a major transformation as they move to full co-education in 2030. From September 2026 girls will join the Under School at 4+, 7+ and 11+, and from September 2028, girls will join Westminster School at 13+. As part of the same charitable trust, both schools are overseen by the same Governing Body.

The role
Westminster is looking for an experienced, collegiate leader to become its next Chair of Governors to succeed Mark Batten. The Chair provides leadership to the Governing Body, ensuring that Governors fulfil their responsibilities for the effective governance of the School. Operating within the School’s statutory framework, the Chair will line manage, support and empower the Head Master of the Great School, Dr Gary Savage and the Master of the Under School, Kate Jefferson, without becoming involved in day-to-day management, while ensuring all Governing Body decisions are made fairly and in the best long-term interests of the School.

The Chair will be a seasoned, strategic and inclusive leader with proven chairing experience, ideally in complex, multi-stakeholder environments of comparable size and scope. Candidates will bring high levels of intellect allied with emotional intelligence, strong commercial acumen, and will be comfortable managing, and inspiring a range of stakeholders. They will bring a collaborative approach and will have the ability to influence, challenge and act as an ambassador for the School. The successful candidate will have strong emotional intelligence, warmth, empathy, and excellent communication skills, enabling them to engage effectively with Governors, staff, pupils, parents, and alumni. Individuals with a connection to the School or no connection at all are welcome to apply. If you do have a connection, please mention it in your statement of motivation.

This is a pro bono position and the expected time commitment varies in line with the School’s annual cycle. It is approximately three to four days per month during term time and around one to two days per month during the holidays. Applications are being managed by Nurole and should be directed to them via the Apply Online link below.
