Westminster School is a busy and vibrant place to work. There is a real sense of community here as, being a boarding school, many members of staff and pupils live on site and the School’s premises are very much treated as a home away from home. Support staff as much as teaching staff are encouraged to embrace the School’s day-to-day activities, whether that be attending an evening concert or a morning service in the Abbey.
Sport, otherwise known as Station, is a big part of life at the School. Westminster has a 10-acre playing field at Vincent Square, the largest square in Central London, which allows for pupils from both Westminster Under School and Westminster School to take part in sport close to the main school sites. The playing field is comprised of cricket pitches, football pitches, alongside tennis courts with both tarmac and artificial grass surfaces. In addition, there is an activity area with apparatus that are used by the pupils who attend Westminster Under School.
The role
We are looking for Groundsperson to help maintain the School’s playing surfaces and surrounding areas to the highest of standards. Reporting to the Head Groundsperson, the Groundsperson will be responsible for grass cutting, hedge trimming, strimming and weeding, and initial marking and overmarking of sports areas. They will also manage machinery, ensuring that all equipment is correctly stored and maintained, and horticultural operations including ground preparation, turfing, planting and seeding. The role will involve liaising with games staff and external parties to ensure the availability of sports pitches and equipment, in the absence of the Head Groundsperson.
The ideal applicant will be an excellent communicator with strong problem-solving and organisational skills and an ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team. They will have a formal qualification in Turf Surface Maintenance and will hold a full UK driving licence. A clear understanding of current Health and Safety legislation is paramount to this role, as is a knowledge of safeguarding. The successful candidate will have previous experience of grounds maintenance.
This is a full-time position with a salary of £35,000 per annum. The Groundsperson will be expected to work Monday to Friday, and Saturdays on rotation, equating to a total of 13 Saturdays per year.
