Head of Science and Technology
Westminster School is a busy and vibrant place to work. There is a real sense of community here: as a boarding school, many members of staff and pupils live on site and the School’s premises are very much treated as a home away from home. All staff are encouraged to embrace the School’s day-to-day activities, whether that be attending an evening concert or a morning service in the Abbey.
The Robert Hooke Science Department supports a broad and ambitious programme of study across Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, Physics and Product Design. Teaching combines rigorous disciplinary knowledge with a strong emphasis on practical skills, enquiry and independent thought. Public examination results are consistently strong and there is a high level of continuation into the Sixth Form, where many pupils go on to study science subjects as part of their four A Level programme. A significant number progress to science-related degrees at leading universities in the UK and overseas.
All pupils in Year 9 study the separate sciences alongside Westminster’s bespoke interdisciplinary FUN-damentals of Science course, which introduces broader scientific thinking through subjects such as Astronomy and Earth Sciences. At GCSE, pupils study three separate sciences, with further options including Computer Science, Electronics and Product Design. The Department also supports a wide range of extension opportunities, including the EPQ, Olympiads, competitions, research projects, lectures, exchanges and the pupil-led Hooke science magazine. Collaboration across disciplines and engagement beyond the classroom are central to the Department’s work.
The role
Following the twelve-year tenure of the current postholder, Westminster School is seeking to appoint a well-qualified and experienced teacher to lead the Science Department from September 2026.
The Head of Science and Technology will provide strategic and academic leadership across the faculty, supporting individual Heads of Science while ensuring coherence of vision and high standards of teaching and learning. The role includes oversight of curriculum development, including interdisciplinary provision and forthcoming Key Stage 5 review, as well as contributing to the School’s wider priorities, including equity, diversity and inclusion and the thoughtful integration of technology in teaching.
In addition to leading on pedagogy and academic development, the postholder will have responsibility for departmental operations, including staffing, timetabling, technician management, health and safety, budgeting and university preparation across the sciences. The Head of Science and Technology will also promote STEM beyond the classroom through partnerships, outreach and enrichment opportunities.
Alongside their academic responsibilities, the successful candidate will contribute to the pastoral and co-curricular life of the School.
This role is full-time and permanent.
