Westminster Under School is a friendly and welcoming place to work, with a real sense of community. Staff members quickly become part of the rhythm of life, both inside and outside the classroom. Social events are regular and varied, with plenty of opportunities to socialise outside working hours. All are encouraged to embrace the School’s day-to-day activities, whether that be attending a concert or a sports fixture.
It is a particularly exciting and significant time to be joining Westminster. As part of Westminster Under School and Westminster School’s move to become fully co-educational, girls will be joining the Under School for the first time in 2026, at the 7+ and 11+ entry points, and a brand new pre-prep will open for boys and girls at the 4+ entry point. In 2028, girls will be joining at 13+ at Westminster School.
Our Pre-Prep Department will cultivate a love of learning, both through formal and child-initiated activities, and there will be plenty of time for opportunities to explore the outdoors, both on our new play balcony and on Vincent Square, our 13-acre private playing field. High-quality adult interactions will prepare children for a stimulating and world-class education in Year 1 and beyond.
The role
Westminster Under School is looking for a bright, caring and skilled Reception Class Teacher, to expertly deliver engaging and thoughtful lessons. As this is a new role and department, this position presents a unique and exciting opportunity to be a key part of the School’s development at a historic moment, as we also expand to be fully co-ed. The successful candidate will teach a small class of approximately 16 pupils, with a full-time teaching assistant. Working closely with the Head of Pre-Prep, who will be their partner teacher, they will contribute towards the preparation of programmes of work, including half-termly planning and termly planning overviews. The Reception Class Teacher will take care of the pre-prep environment, regularly updating class and corridor displays and providing a stimulating classroom experience for all. They will also take part in trips and supervise afterschool club provision on a rotational basis, as well as assist with Open Days.
Children work significantly beyond their chronological age at Westminster Under School, therefore experience of teaching Year 1 and 2 would be advantageous, as would teaching in a Prep school environment. Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline and will have completed a full or relevant Level 6 qualification. The Reception Class Teacher will be an excellent communicator who has the ability to inspire and motivate both pupils and staff. Strong organisational and administration skills, with the ability to plan, prioritise and manage a varied workload, are integral to the role. The ideal applicant will show an enthusiasm for Early Years, as reflected in their teaching.
This is a full-time, permanent role.
