Language, leadership, community: Westminster pupils shape the agenda for Black History Month
31 October 2025

Throughout October, Westminster pupils led a range of talks exploring themes of language and community as part of the School’s vibrant societies’ scene.

Each year, Black History Month provides pupils with a platform to research and present on topics that resonate personally, deepening the community’s understanding of Black history, heritage and culture. The 2025 programme was both nuanced and insightful, with lecture rooms and classrooms filled with engaged pupils and staff.

In Philosophy Society, Jijith (Remove, WW) spoke about the origins and rise of the Abyssinian Church in Harlem; in Linguistics Society, Chris (Sixth Form, LL) examined diaspora language retention in Africa as populations have shifted geographically; in Jewish Society, Martin (Remove, PP) analysed the intricate narrative of Ethiopian Jews; in Law Society, Julia (Remove, WW) spoke on the colonial foundations and legacies of international law; while the Huxley Society’s Akhil (Remove, LL) and Ianni (Remove, GG) hosted a Kahoot celebrating Black scientists.

As part of Westminster’s tradition of collaboration, pupils from the Great School visited Westminster Under School to speak with younger peers. Chris (Sixth Form, LL) led an assembly on activists whose courage and conviction shaped history, encouraging pupils to consider representation, leadership and how each person can contribute to positive change.

The celebrations extended to food, as Westminster’s catering team set up a Yard pop-up featuring Jamaican cake and a sorrel and ginger drink, while Black culture was celebrated through themed lunches.

Black History Month at Westminster continues to remind the community to look beyond individual identity and to recognise the stories and achievements of those whose contributions have too often been overlooked.

Chris (Sixth Form, LL) said: “From the vibrant smiles of our budding Under School pupils, to the curious engagement of my counterparts in the Great School as we took an immersive dive into African languages, the week was certainly rewarding and filled me with a great sense of pride.”
