Expeditions and Exchanges

Great School Crest

From our home in Dean’s Yard, we can walk, tube or bus to museums and galleries, catch trains to all four corners of the country, or easily get to Heathrow or Gatwick for some globetrotting.

Westminster offers an extensive variety of cultural and leisure trips.

Linguists immerse themselves on visits to France, Georgia, Germany and Spain; art historians travel to Florence and Venice to study the works of the Old Masters; outdoorists explore the rugged landscapes of Cumbria, Pembrokeshire and Iceland; skiers experience the slopes of the French Alps, Jasper and Vermont; rowers compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston; and geographers have explored Morocco and Jordan.

Expeditions

Whether crossing borders or oceans, Westminsters on expedition consistently gain new insights into themselves and the world around them, as well as a deeper appreciation for the subject or interest that may have inspired their journey.

Some of the School’s expeditions have now been running for many years, including the longstanding Easter Greek trip for Classics enthusiasts. Every year, Year 12 pupils are also offered the chance to travel to the USA to explore university options. Twice a year, the School runs Lower School Expeditions (LSEs) for pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11. Recent LSEs have taken pupils across the UK and Europe, offering opportunities to photograph the Northern Lights in Iceland or to develop climbing skills in Catalunya. LSEs often stay more local too, with homestay skateboarding courses in London or residential cookery courses in the north of England.

We make the most of our own nation’s beauty, history and heritage. In particular we have a School House in Alston, Cumbria, which serves as a base for numerous outdoor activity trips across the northern Pennines. All Year 9 pupils visit Alston for a four-day stay with their school house, as a way of building community. Alongside exploring the fells of the Lake District and visiting Hadrian’s Wall, pupils enjoy the chance to cook and spend time together in a relaxed, non‑school environment.

Exchanges

There is no better way to learn a language than to immerse yourself in the culture where it is spoken. Over the years that Westminster has offered exchanges with schools in France, Germany and Spain, we have not only seen new friendships formed and greater cultural awareness gained, but also higher achievement in language examinations.

By visiting the native home of the language they are learning, and by engaging in genuine conversation with peers who speak it as a mother tongue, pupils are able to understand the colloquial and cultural nuances of a language in a way that cannot be replicated in the classroom. Our European GCSE and A Level exchanges with schools in Berlin, Paris and Munich allow language-learners to spend time with a host family overseas, and to host their exchange partners in London. In 2025 Westminster also launched a Martinique Exchange for A Level Francophones.

Pupils taking GCSE Spanish can take part in a five-day homestay in Andalucia in Year 11 and have the opportunity for another such trip in the Sixth Form, this time in Salamanca, while those pupils studying Russian have the opportunity to visit Georgia for language immersion.

Our exchange programmes are successful across all our language departments, contextualising pupils’ learning and boosting their confidence ahead of exams. Equally important is the ability of these trips and exchanges to broaden pupils’ cultural and social awareness and contribute meaningfully to their wider personal development.

  • "I really enjoyed the opportunity to use the language I had learnt in the classroom while I was there - in shops, in the street, everywhere... I was so pleased that people understood me!"

    — Ravi, Year 11 pupil

  • "The trips I’ve been on have taught me so many new things and have actually changed the way I think when I’m back in the classroom."

    — Rose, Year 13 pupil
