After Westminster Under School

Under School Crest

Westminster School and Westminster Under School operate under a ‘one charity, two Schools’ model. The two schools share the same Governing Body, sports ground and sports centre, and many members of administration and support staff, but they have their own leaders, leadership teams and teachers.

With a shared ethos of promoting open enquiry, thoughtful discussion, and a love of learning beyond the exam syllabus, it is a natural transition for Under School pupils who continue their education at Westminster School. And while those pupils who join us at 11+ do continue their education at Westminster School, for those who join us at 4+ and 7+  entry to Westminster School in Year 9 is subject to the standard entry testing.

A number of Westminster Under School pupils who move on to Westminster School are awarded King’s or Music Scholarships. Similarly, many pupils who continue their education elsewhere do so with the support of scholarships.

It is important to remember at all stages that Westminster, like Westminster Under School, is not the right school for everyone: the pace is quick and pupils need to continue to enjoy being stretched, challenged, and exposed to new ideas, while balancing a busy schedule. Where Westminster School is not the right choice of senior school for a child, the Under School will support families in finding the right senior school for them.

Similarly, we will support those pupils who choose to move to another senior school at 11+ or 13+, whether it be a day, weekly or a full boarding experience outside of London.

If I enter the Under School at 11+, will I have a place at Westminster School in Year 9?

The 11+ entry point is a unique one: pupils have secured entry to both schools. They enter the Under School in Year 7, going through the same process at the same time as our pupils in Year 6,  before progressing to Westminster School in Year 9, with no further entry testing.

Does 4+ and 7+ entry to Westminster Under School guarantee a place at Westminster School?

For pupils who join us at 7+ or come up from our Pre-prep, Year 6 acts as a check that Westminster School remains the right place for each child and the right fit for the individual. For the majority, an unconditional offer to Westminster School is made after taking the ISEB Common Pre-Tests, with some additional testing in Mathematics and English, and meeting a senior member of staff from Westminster School.

For those who join us at 4+, they continue their early years education at the School and will usually progress to 7+. They will be internally and informally assessed to ensure they are making good progress, and there will be ongoing dialogue with families to ensure each child is happy and that the Under School remains the right fit for them.
