Academic Life

Great School Crest

Westminster is a vibrant, challenging and deeply rewarding place to study – a place where young people achieve exceptional exam results and go on to do great things. Academic life at Westminster is defined by curiosity, scholarship, and a genuine love of learning. Our pupils engage with a broad and rigorous curriculum that encourages them to question, explore and think independently.

Guided by teachers who are subject specialists, boys and girls develop the intellectual confidence and academic discipline that prepare them not only for examinations, but for lifelong learning beyond the School. Across our departments, in the Library, and through tailored learning support, we nurture every pupil’s potential and champion pupil-led initiatives to further develop interests in topics and ideas. Teachers teach beyond the syllabuses and academic learning is enriched by the school’s extensive co-curricular offering. Pupils are frequently exposed to university-style lectures from world-renowned speakers.

Following any after-school commitments, pupils are set prep every evening, which boarders choose to complete in their house or in the library, while day pupils can do the same or opt to work at home. There is a collegiate approach to studying, and pupils can often be seen working in groups and supporting one another with homework. Every pupil is allocated a tutor who provides guidance with academic work and who supports the housemaster with overseeing the pupil’s pastoral wellbeing. The School regularly reports on pupils’ progress, and there are parents’ evenings held throughout the year, allowing for ongoing and open dialogue with families to ensure each child is happy with their choices and managing their workload effectively.
