PSHE is a vital part of the WUS curriculum. Each year group has a weekly lesson, taught by subject specialists, in which the pupils acquire the knowledge, understanding, and skills that they need to manage their lives now and in the future. The PSHE curriculum ties in with the School’s Values, which are key to the self‑development of our pupils and their emotional wellbeing.
Our PSHE lessons provide a safe and secure environment in which pupils learn about a variety of topics. We live in a world that is changing rapidly, where the increasing pace of life brings with it a multitude of choices and freedoms. The aim of our PSHE programme is to equip each pupil with the skills they need to be happy, healthy, and confident in the years to come, becoming the best they can be as individuals, family members, and members of wider society.
Curriculum
PSHE is taught at the Under School through a ‘spiral programme’. At each encounter, the level of demand increases and learning is progressively deepened. Our guiding principles are to ensure subject content is age‑ and development‑appropriate, and that it is taught sensitively and inclusively, with respect to the differing backgrounds and beliefs of both pupils and parents. All content studied and discussed is relevant to appropriate age groups and follows national, statutory guidelines. We want our pupils to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self‑esteem, the ability to manage risk, teamwork, and critical thinking. These are threaded through the context of our learning in PSHE, which is grouped into three core themes studied over the three terms of the academic year:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Relationships
- Living in the Wider World
Enrichment
Pupils participate in workshops outside their PSHE lessons and learn from visiting speakers from organisations such as The Everyday Sexism Project, Voice Box, and many more. They also have the opportunity to visit institutions such as the Royal Courts of Justice, learning about the legal and historical importance of the work carried out there.
