Hakluyt’s

Founded as the fourth day house to accommodate expanded numbers, Hakluyt’s occupies a central building in Little Dean’s Yard on the site of the School’s old fives courts. The house is named after Richard Hakluyt, the notable geographer and writer who was a Queen’s Scholar (1564-1570). The name was chosen with an amused eye to pupils’ likely difficulties spelling it correctly, as much as to his undoubted distinction.

  • "Hakluyt’s is ideally situated in the heart of the School, just through Liddell’s Arch, meaning it is easy to get to and close to all the action while remaining a calm and friendly space. We have great facilities, including a kitchenette, table football tables and a particularly nice pool table and comfortably boast the best collection of house plants in SW1. We are spread over three floors with pupils working their way up as they move through the School, with some sharing of rooms between year groups to aid vertical integration. Hakluytians are encouraged to be kind, to volunteer, to try new things and to be committed. We enjoy house events such as pizza evenings, our annual house concert, gingerbread house decorating and pool competitions. Our teams for house competitions always have a smile on their face and we have had notable recent success in Athletics, winning the Tim Woods Trophy for combined success in the three running events through the year. We are the only house to currently have joint housemasters who share responsibility for the house with specific responsibility for different cohorts in a system that retains the continuity of one housemaster through the pupil’s time at the school."
